The History of Gambling

23 Jun

Since the beginning of time, people have always enjoyed risking their possessions or assets on games of chance, or skill. Gambling requires three key elements; consideration, chance, and prize.

Since its evolution from the beginning of time until now, the idea of gambling has grown into a multi billion dollar a year industry. In 2009, an estimated 335$ billion circulated in the legal gambling market. This number does not even take into consideration the illegal amount of gambling that occurs thruought the world, which is said to be even more than the legal market.

In many countries, the practice of gambling is illegal. However, there is obviously a lot of illegal gambling going on in these countries. Many of these illegal sectors of gambling cause vulnerability to certain parts of society. They also contribute to gang violence and other types of illegal activity.

So what should society do?

That is the question that many people have been asking for a number of years.

Truthfully, I really don’t have an answer. Gambling can be observed from many different paradigms, depending on who is doing the observing. For me, I think that gambling and the adrenaline rush that people get when they gamble exists in a good portion of the world’s population. With that being said, I think that government’s should work towards the legalization and control of gambling on all levels. This will pave the way for relief organizations to provide aid for many gamblers who are at risk or have gambling addictions.
